I was looking for something else to read along the lines of the
Hunger Games series, and picked up this book on a friend's suggestion.
I'm glad I did. The story picks up a nice pace once you hit chapter two. Parts of it gave me the chills!
It reminds me, in some respects, of Lois Lowry's "The Giver", but the character and setting have an identity all their own. Hoping Monroe releases the next book soon!

Like another reviewer said, the male main character is young, but because of the language and conflicts I think the story/theme probably appeals more to older teenagers or adults. I would recommend it it you like the light suspense/mystery of TV shows like Lost, Revolution, etc.

(I'm glad reading young adult fiction is the latest trend for adults. As much as I like reading Franzen or other current prose-y character novelists, sometimes you just want a good, brief, story, and the YA genre fits the bill.)

The author takes an ordinary boy with ordinary problems -- hulking playground bullies -- and turns it into a fantasy epic. The writing is crisp and the characters real and compelling. It's supposed to be a young adult story but old adults will fancy it, too. I look forward to the next adventure. J. Scott Payne
