I bought this book because I was both interested in themes of identity and belonging and also because I was hoping for a entertaining and intelligent read. Unfortunately, the book didn't really deliver on either of these terms. It's a shame because the beginning was riveting and the writer painted an extraordinarily descriptive picture of the city of Singapore. The chapter also dealt vividly with the family's reaction to her mother's death. Intrigued as to what would follow, I was dissapointed to find that chapter 2 was the first in long run of chapters of, gulp, background.
So instead of being able to find out what would happened to the main protagonist, I instead had to wade through page after page, and chapter after chapter of laborious background events. This wouldn't be so bad if they were treated in scenes and if the writing was smooth and readable. But the writer had chosen to use huge chunks of dull narrative and the writing itself was, for the most part, convoluted and verbose. This clunker from page 231 is not untypical: "I could feel palpable waves of anxiety emanating from his tall, lanky frame". Something like "He looked anxious", would have sufficed.
It's a shame because this writer clearly had something to say. She just needed an editor to improve the prose and shape it into something resembling fiction, not historical text.
